Another electrocautery unit repair, this time for a broken foot-pedal connector. This writeup actually includes 2 repairs on 2 different units.

Electrocautery units clearly get used a lot and seem prone to having leads yanked out. This older unit made use of a plastic socket for the screw in foot switch which is metal. This can be seen below as can the damage to the thread. The damage is the result of the socket being ripped out one too many times.

It is important that this connector works correctly as it not only ensures a reliable connection and operation, but it is also IP rated. This makes sure any arcing inside the connector are isolated from any flammable gases and liquids during surgery.

Electrocautery Unit

This socket was isolated from the main board, the wires unsoldered, and a new metal bodied replacement soldered in.

This electrocautery unit repair actually resulted in something that was better than the pre repair as it makes use of the updated stronger metal bodied connector.

The other side of this repair, quite literally, is where the plug on the foot-switch becomes damaged. This is typically for the exact same reason as damage to the socket.

We ordered a new plug of the correct spec. The pins and carrier were undamaged, so they were left and the new connector housing and locking ring installed around them.
